Abstract

Heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems are essential for indoor environmental control, yet conventional electric-fan-driven designs face persistent challenges in filtration efficiency, energy use, contamination reintroduction, and precise airflow control, especially in high-cleanliness settings such as hospitals, laboratories, and cleanrooms. This study examines the adoption of air compressors as an alternative powering medium for clean-air delivery in HVAC applications. It reviews compressor operating principles, performance parameters, and major types (reciprocating, rotary screw, centrifugal and scroll), emphasizing oil-free designs for purity. Compressed-air treatment trains filtration, drying, and oil removal are shown to be structurally integral rather than optional, potentially offering advantages over downstream-only filtration. Integration aspects covered include system architecture, pneumatic actuation of dampers and valves, sizing, and representative configurations ranging from centralized plants to point-of-use units. Comparative analysis reveals that while compressed-air systems incur substantially higher energy costs (typically 8-10 % overall efficiency versus higher values for electric fans), they provide inherent purification dependency, non-electrical safety benefits, and suitability for precision or hazardous zones. Emerging trends such as IoT-enabled predictive maintenance, waste-heat recovery, variable-speed drives, and hybrid architectures are identified as pathways to mitigate efficiency and reliability drawbacks. The review concludes that context-specific, hybrid deployment rather than wholesale replacement offers the most viable near-term route for leveraging compressed air in clean-air HVAC systems.
